Welcome - I'm Mika and I invite you to
Breathe With Me
During this most vulnerable time in your life, I will be your support as a birth and/or postpartum doula.
During this most vulnerable time in your life, I will be your support as a birth and/or postpartum doula.
A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support. The word doula is a Greek word meaning women's servant. Women have been serving others in childbirth for many centuries and have proven that support from another woman has a positive impact on the labor process.
Research studies have found that when doulas attend births with the family - labors are shorter, there are fewer complications and there is less need for medical interventions including Pitocin, epidurals and cesarean births.
You may be thinking, "My partner will be with me," but keep in mind that the birthing experience is an extremely emotional time for your partner as well, who may be nervous and extremely concerned. That's where I step in. I will provide support and reassurance to you and your partner. I understand how important the birth experience is and I want to make it as positive and memorable as possible.
Not everyone has the luxury of having a caring family member nearby and available that will help out and provide you with quiet support and assistance when you come home with baby.
Although your family members mean well, they can sometimes add stress to what can already be a stressful time.
As your postpartum doula I will provide support and intervention, rather than opinion. I will provide you with evidenced-based information on things such as infant feeding, emotional and physical recovery from birth, mother-baby bonding, infant soothing and basic newborn care.
I will nurture you so you can nurture your baby.

In 1984 I waddled across the stage to get my diploma as I was graduating from Nursing School. I was a very large, round vision of a woman, two weeks shy of my due date with my third child. Soon after his birth I was back in the Labor & Delivery unit, but this time I was working there. It was my passion to be a support for moms and their partners. It was second nature for me to know what a mom needs during her labor and birthing process.
However, life changes and events had me moving across country and away from the nursing profession. Every chance I had, wherever I was, to be the support for a mom, through friends and family, I took it.
I have recently retired from the leadership of an organization, where I worked with children, teens and parents. And now I have the time, and devotion to continue doing what I love - to be a support for laboring moms and their partners. After having kids of my own, as the doula during the births of my four grand kids, as well as being the doula for dozens of other moms, my natural instinct to give you support during your labor and birth will be an honor.
As a mom and a grandmother, a former labor and delivery tech, nurse and doula, I have developed quite a bit of wisdom about being a support for moms that are pregnant, laboring and postpartum. I have also personally learned a great deal from my own particular birth experiences. I was young when I became pregnant with my daughter. I was afraid and clueless about taking care of a child. How I wish I would have had a birth & postpartum doula! My son, Chris was a whopping 10 1/2 pounds. He kept me busy wanting to nurse frequently. I went through in vitro fertilization with my youngest son and have lots of knowledge to share if you are considering the process. My personal life experiences along with all of the training, involvement and knowledge I have gained over many decades, have given me the confidence to give you an empowering birth experience.
